“Dad, do people in North Dakota have an accent?  Like Canadians?”

“Yes, I think so.”

“And people in the South say ‘ya’ll,’ right?”

“That’s right.”

“Why do people have accents?”

“That’s just the way they talk in those places.  A regional dialect.  Like in England or Australia.”

“Do we have an accent?  Or, those people would say we have an accent and the way they talk is normal.”



“Do people in California have an accent?”

“I don’t know.”

“I guess we’ll find out.”
