lake mead

January 26, 2010

Lake Mead is just north of Hoover Dam and close to Las Vegas.  This is the biggest chunk of bare earth I have ever seen without people or trees on it.  The raw emptiness of the park is unnerving.  We skipped the nearby (and highly recommended) Valley of Fire, which has lots of rock formations like those pictured, formed from ancient dunes compressed into Aztec sandstone.
